What Gets Passed Down Isn't Only What's in the Will

I’ve been helping estate planning attorneys build their businesses for a decade; they spend their careers helping people decide who gets what. The will, the trust, the beneficiary designations, the property titles: all of it is built to answer questions as cleanly as the law allows: who receives what when I'm gone, and what legacy I leave behind once I’ve left this plane. In the work I do outside of that business coaching, I've learned that the paperwork only accounts for some of what actually gets passed down.

I’m talking about the unseen, what doesn't show up in any document. The pattern that keeps repeating in a family regardless of who inherits what: money that seems to always run through your fingers no matter how much of it arrives, relationships that fail in the same pattern generation after generation, business that struggles the same way it struggled for a parent or a grandparent no matter how different the industry, a run of loss that starts to feel less like bad luck and more like… you know, a CURSE. Families rarely acknowledge it, but most people recognize it the moment someone else describes it. "This always happens to the women in our family" or "we've never been able to hold onto money" gets repeated at holidays like a simple fact of the family's nature.

Some of what repeats through a family line is a family curse, in the literal and specific sense of the term: a pattern set in motion by anger, revenge, or sustained ill-will directed at a person or a line, that then produces the same kind of misfortune across generations until someone actually clears it. I check for this during each analysis; when it's there (and it is 99% of the time), it explains a lot. It’s why the same kind of loss keeps finding its way into a family that otherwise did everything right, why the story a family tells about itself has held for so long that everyone assumes it's simply how things are.

This is where the estate planning conversation and my own work actually meet. An attorney can build the most airtight structure available: the trust that protects assets, the plan that avoids probate, the language that heads off the in-fighting so many families go through after a death. Planning is critical, but it won’t take care of what's actually moving through a family line: a curse.

Once a curse like this is cleared, it doesn't return for the specific individual being cleared. While a new curse can still be cast - the same way a new one can be cast on any person at any time - what clearing it does is remove that unwanted inheritance. It can clear the slate and make space for deeper healing for the generations that follow. Whatever a family builds next isn't running on autopilot from something nobody agreed to in the first place.

A legacy is usually thought of as what you leave behind intentionally: the wealth, the property, the name on the door. Most families are also leaving behind what they never had awareness of, and that part DOES get passed down with as much certainty as anything named in a will. Do you want to know what the legacy you're leaving behind actually is? A Professional Master Clearing™ can create so much healing in a family that’s been plagued for years.
